Pocket Quest 2024 Progress: Week 2
Welcome to Issue #9. I'm K.J. Let's just dive right in, shall we?
Okay okay. You can learn more about me here if you want.
What's in Your Folder?
Have you downloaded so many things from DriveThruRPG and other RPG-related sites then one day realize there's more unread content than read content in your over-stuffed RPG folder?
Maybe it's just me.
Below I'd like to give you three fast recommendations of favorite scenarios I have read and ran - a lot (because I only review what I play completely through or at least read cover-to-cover).
I've already reviewed these on DriveThruRPG, so when you click on the links, you can easily find my reviews under K.J.
Alpaca in the Sheep Field, a short, modern-day Call of Cthulhu scenario for 7e
Author: John Hedge
The Prisoner's Dilemma, a classic Call of Cthulhu scenario for 7e
Author: T A Newman
Legacy of Lombard House, a classic Call of Cthulhu scenario for 7e
Author: Lee Wade
Brilliant writers. Brilliant content. Incredibly fun whether you are the Keeper or the investigator. Numerous players for the past several months have enjoyed playing these at my table. Now it’s your turn.
Have you played any of these? If you pick up any of these, leave me a comment. Let me know what you think!
Pocket Quest 2024: Week 2
As I mentioned last week, the theme for DriveThruRPG's third annual game jam (known as Pocket Quest) is heist. The number of participants has grown significantly over the years - which is amazing. More content = more gaming.
I asked folks in the community, "How can a game creator be unique or stand out?"
One of you answered: "I think a heist game is successful when the players finish playing and *want* to talk about it. Finding ways to create stakes and have it get nail bitingly close is going to give people stories of playing your game. And that's what makes people talk about it, share it, and play again."
Another replied: "For me the easiest way to mix it up is by transposing the heist plot riffs to a different type of setting...Even if you do set the game in a familiar place there is the possibility to bring in a plot element from a different genre to give it something unexpected."
At this point, I have decided to offer support to a few of my fellow Pocket Questers by doing layout design for free rather than submit my own entry.
Something may strike my fancy, but at this stage, I'm not hearing the muse speak to me on a heist-related pocket adventure. With less than 6 weeks, will something come to me in time? Or will I be content supporting and helping others?
Stay tuned.
